Early Intervention to Improve Health
The Emory Newborn Screening Program, in partnership with the Georgia Department of Public Health, strives to ensure that every baby in Georgia receives the benefit of early diagnosis and treatment for the conditions detectable on the Georgia newborn screening panel.
Newborn screening involves the collection of a few drops of blood in order to screen for many treatable conditions. Children may require additional testing after receiving an abnormal screen result. Our short-term follow-up program will assist healthcare providers and families in providing optimal care in this situation, with diagnostic testing, immediate interventions, and assistance with appropriate clinical referrals.
Emory's contribution to Georgia's newborn screening system
- Short-term follow-up after a baby is found to have a positive screening result
- Laboratory testing to confirm or rule out a diagnosis
- Clinical care after diagnosis of a metabolic disorder
